She begins with an orphan. Old Mr. Earnshaw walks home from Liverpool carrying not the promised gifts but a filthy, silent, dark-haired child, and the family fractures on the spot. That child is Heathcliff, resented by Catherine's brother Hindley and inseparable from Catherine herself, whose bond with him is fierce enough to make her say, "Nelly, I am Heathcliff!" What that love becomes, once pride and social calculus come between them, is the engine of everything that follows across two households and two generations.

Emily Brontë writes passion and cruelty in the same breath, letting the moor's storms and its rare tender mornings mirror the people who cross it. Heathcliff broods and schemes; Catherine burns; Nelly watches. And Lockwood, who confesses he bestows his own attributes too liberally on others, is never quite the reliable guide he thinks he is. The result is a tragedy told from the inside of a haunted house, honest about how far love can turn to ruin.
