About this book
A boy in Tuckahoe, Maryland, cannot say when he was born. Slaveholders keep that knowledge from him on purpose, and this small theft is only the beginning. Frederick Douglass opens his own story with what it took from him first — a mother, Harriet Bailey, glimpsed only in darkness before she died; a childhood spent under Captain Anthony and the overseers of Colonel Lloyd's vast plantation; and an earliest memory he never shakes, the sight of his Aunt Hester whipped bloody at a hook in the joist. "It was the blood-stained gate," he writes, "the entrance to the hell of slavery, through which I was about to pass."
