Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave

The turn comes quietly, through a lesson forbidden. When a master forbids his wife to teach the boy his letters — learning, he warns, would spoil the best slave in the world — the boy overhears and understands. From there, reading becomes something stolen in scraps: bread traded to poor white boys for lessons, letters chalked on fences, a shipyard's timber-marks copied by hand.

Douglass writes plainly, and the plainness is its own kind of force. He names the overseer Gore, who shot a man dead in a creek and answered to no one. He records a grandmother left to die alone in a hut in the woods, groping in the dark for water. And he sets down the songs of the enslaved, which he insists were sorrow, never contentment: "Slaves sing most when they are most unhappy." No line reaches for more than the fact deserves.
