A rich, unmarried man rents Netherfield Park, and the neighborhood stirs. "Everyone agrees that a rich, unmarried man must want to find a wife," the book begins — a line that sets its tongue firmly in its cheek and never quite takes it out. Mrs. Bennet has five daughters and one aim in life; Mr. Bennet has a library and a dry remark for every occasion. Between them stands Elizabeth, the second and cleverest, watching it all with a quick and unsparing eye.
