A young man from York cannot sit still. His father, a prudent merchant, pleads with him to stay home and keep to the "middle station of life," warning that any other course invites ruin. The son sails anyway. From Hull he goes to sea and into the teeth of storms that run mountains high, into capture and slavery at Sallee, into a desperate escape and a fortune half-made in Brazil — and at last onto the shore of an uninhabited island, the sole survivor of a wreck, with nothing but the sea, the rocks, and two distant islands for company.
