About this book

Long ago, an ancient general sat down to distill the whole of warfare into a system of calculation, deception, and restraint. The voice belongs to Sun Tzu, and it carries every line of the book with the certainty of a man who has thought the matter through to its root. War, he begins, is vital to the State, "a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin." From there he builds, patiently, toward a single startling claim: that the highest skill is winning without fighting at all.
