About this book

It begins with a proposal that goes wrong. Malone, a young reporter for the Daily Gazette, kneels before the proud and lovely Gladys, only to be told she could never love an ordinary man. "There are heroisms all round us waiting to be done," she says, and with that one sentence she sends him off to find one. What he finds is Professor Challenger — a zoologist with an Assyrian-bull beard, huge hairy hands, and a temper that lands the two of them tangled in a chair and rolling down the front steps into the gutter.
