The Life of Olaudah Equiano

The book crosses three continents and never quite settles. A child is renamed Gustavus Vassa against his will, pressed into naval service, taught to read, carried through battle and Arctic ice and the ports of the West Indies. There is Captain Pascal, who buys him and later sells him without warning, and the Quaker merchant Robert King, who treats him humanely; later there is John Annis, a free man the author fights, alongside Granville Sharp, to save. Through it all runs an accounting of ordinary savagery — an iron muzzle locking a woman's mouth, an itemized ledger of thumbscrews and chains — laid down plainly, as evidence.

Equiano writes as witness, as moral petitioner, and as a soul in search of its own peace. "O, ye nominal Christians!" he demands, "might not an African ask you, learned you this from your God?" There is indignation here, and devotion, and a boy's tenderness that never leaves the man. He tallies his small trades bit by bit, presses his ear to books hoping they will answer, and reaches at last for something larger than his own freedom.

That freedom, when it comes, is worth the reading: the money in hand, the heart pounding, feet "winged with joy." What lies beyond it, and what he chooses to do with a voice that was never meant to survive, is the door this book holds open.
