About this book
It opens with letters. Robert Walton, an explorer bound for the North Pole, writes to his sister Margaret from the ice, aching for a companion he cannot find among his crew. "I bitterly feel the want of a friend," he tells her. Then his ship, locked in the Arctic, sights a gigantic figure driving a sledge across the frozen sea, and the next morning takes aboard a nearly frozen stranger who has been pursuing it. The stranger recovers slowly under Walton's care. And at last he agrees to tell his tale.
