About this book

A hungry Fox leaps again and again at grapes strung along a high trellis, fails each time, then strolls off with his dignity intact: "I thought those Grapes were ripe, but I see now they are quite sour." So begins a gathering of small tales in which animals, gods, and ordinary folk act out the whole comedy of wanting: pride, greed, cunning, folly, each one turning on a twist and closing with a lesson that has outlasted the centuries.
