About this book

Two men haul a coffin across the frozen North on a birch-bark sled, low on ammunition, ringed each night by gleaming eyes suspended in the blackness at the edge of their fire. A she-wolf with a strange reddish coat trots calmly onto the trail behind them, studies them with a wistfulness "bred of hunger, as cruel as its own fangs," and vanishes the instant a rifle rises. So Jack London opens White Fang: with the Wild itself as a presence, an old law that aims always to destroy movement, because life, to the Wild, is an offence.
