About this book

A Short History of the World opens not with kings or battles but with a tabletop: shrink the earth to a one-inch ball, and the sun becomes a nine-foot sphere a fifth of a mile off, the nearest star forty thousand miles away across that same scale. H. G. Wells begins there, in the emptiness, then narrows to the thin shell of life clinging to a spinning planet, and from that first stirring "in the intertidal slime" he carries the whole human story forward.
