About this book
Marseilles, February 1815. The Pharaon comes into harbor, and Edmond Dantès stands on deck, a young man with everything before him: a captaincy all but promised, a father waiting, a girl named Mercédès waiting too. He is honest and hopeful, the kind of man other men envy without quite admitting why. That envy has a plan. On the day of his wedding feast, with the wine still on the table and a toast half-spoken, soldiers' footsteps sound on the stairs.
