Mansfield Park

Years pass, and the great house fills with talk of marriage and advantage. Into it come the lively, worldly Crawfords, Henry and Mary, whose charm sets a new tone at Mansfield. There are private theatricals staged while the grave Sir Thomas is away, engagements pursued for the wrong reasons, and a household drifting toward scandal, all watched by Fanny, who holds to her own judgment when almost no one asks for it. "Everybody should marry as soon as they can do it to advantage," Mary Crawford declares, and Austen lets that cheerful cynicism speak for itself.

Austen writes here with a cool, ironic patience, turning a garden stroll or a drawing-room conversation into a quiet map of who wants what, and at whose cost. Mrs. Norris performs her generosity loudly while sparing herself every real trouble; Lady Bertram drifts through her days attached to her pug; Sir Thomas learns, slowly and painfully, to read his own children.

At its center stands the least assuming person in the room, poor, overlooked, steadfast, and the novel's long unhurried question is whether steadiness of principle can matter more than wit or fortune. The door is open. Fanny is on the stairs, and someone is about to notice.
