About this book
On Independence Day of 1845, a man moves into an unfinished cabin he built himself on the shore of a New England pond. He stays two years and two months, alone, earning his keep by the labor of his hands. Walden is the record of that experiment: one man's attempt to strip life down to its essentials and see what living deliberately has to teach. "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately," Thoreau writes, "and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."

When I wrote the following pages, or most of them, I lived alone in the woods.
I lived a mile from any neighbor, in a house I built myself.
It stood on the shore of Walden Pond, in Concord, Massachusetts.
I earned my living only by the work of my own hands.
I lived there for two years and two months.
Now I am living in society again, just for a while.
I usually would not talk so much about myself and my life.
