It begins on the most unpromising of steeds: an old yellow pony, tailless, its head drooping below its knees, plodding into the town of Meung while onlookers laugh. On its back rides D'Artagnan, a hot-blooded young Gascon bound for Paris with fifteen crowns, a letter of introduction, and his father's parting counsel: "Never fear quarrels, but seek adventures." Adventures find him quickly enough. Within days he has picked three duels with the very Musketeers he means to join, and by the time swords are drawn, he has instead won the friendship of Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, the Three Inseparables, sworn to one motto: "All for one, one for all."
