To the Lighthouse

Mrs. Ramsay is the still center. She binds the house together with beauty and care and ritual, drawing a scattered dinner table into one warm, candlelit whole over the Bœuf en Daube. Around her moves her blunt, brilliant husband, forever fearing his own mediocrity, privately marching through the alphabet of thought toward a "letter Q" he cannot pass. Nearer the edges are the ambitious Tansley, who both scorns and adores her, and young Paul and Minta, nudged toward a marriage neither quite chose. Then time itself takes the book, seasons pouring through empty rooms, and a decade turns before the long-deferred journey is taken up again.

Woolf writes the inner weather of ordinary people — the way a lighthouse beam can stroke the mind and loose a flood of remembered happiness, the way grief and comedy sit side by side, as when a woman's flustered praise of a man's boots cracks straight through his theatrical mourning. Alive to how a single evening can be made to "stand still," the writing catches how a moment slips into the past even as it happens.

What endures here is the reaching — toward the Lighthouse, toward each other, toward some shape that will hold. That reaching stays open, a way in for whoever comes to see what the light finds.
