In 1866, the world's oceans hold a rumor with teeth. Ships are struck without warning, an iron hull punched through as if by design, and the public cries out for the seas to be cleared of a monster. Into this Jules Verne sends Professor Pierre Aronnax, a Parisian naturalist just home from Nebraska, who theorizes the creature is a colossal narwhal and finds himself aboard the American frigate Abraham Lincoln, hunting it across the Atlantic. With him go his unshakably devoted servant Conseil and Ned Land, the skeptical Canadian harpooner who insists, from the start, that the beast is "made of sheet iron."
