About this book
On the deck of a yawl anchored in the Thames at dusk, the sails hanging like red clusters of canvas, a brooding gloom over the city beyond, a seaman named Marlow begins to talk. He tells his companions of a river far from England, and of the time he took a steamboat captain's post with a Belgian trading company. "And this also," he says, "has been one of the dark places of the earth." From there the story turns inward and upward, toward a great African river and the enigma waiting at the end of it.

Nellie var en lille sejlbåd.
The Nellie was a small sailing boat.
Den lå for anker, og sejlene bevægede sig slet ikke.
It stopped at anchor, and its sails did not move at all.
Vandet steg, og der var næsten ingen vind.
The tide was coming in, and there was almost no wind.
Båden skulle sejle ned ad floden.
The boat needed to travel down the river.
Så den eneste mulighed var at stoppe og vente, til vandet vendte.
So the only choice was to stop and wait for the tide to change.
Den brede Themsen lå foran os som starten på en meget lang vej.
The wide river of the Thames stretched before us like the start of a road that never ends.
Langt væk mødtes havet og himlen, uden nogen linje imellem dem.
Far out, the sea and the sky joined together with no line between them.
