About this book
On the deck of a yawl anchored in the Thames at dusk, the sails hanging like red clusters of canvas, a brooding gloom over the city beyond, a seaman named Marlow begins to talk. He tells his companions of a river far from England, and of the time he took a steamboat captain's post with a Belgian trading company. "And this also," he says, "has been one of the dark places of the earth." From there the story turns inward and upward, toward a great African river and the enigma waiting at the end of it.

Nellie küçük bir yelkenli tekneydi.
The Nellie was a small sailing boat.
Demir attı ve yelkenleri hiç hareket etmedi.
It stopped at anchor, and its sails did not move at all.
Gelgit yükseliyordu ve neredeyse hiç rüzgar yoktu.
The tide was coming in, and there was almost no wind.
Tekne nehirden aşağı gitmek zorundaydı.
The boat needed to travel down the river.
Bu yüzden tek seçenek durup gelgitin değişmesini beklemekti.
So the only choice was to stop and wait for the tide to change.
Thames’in geniş nehri önümüzde uzanıyordu; sanki bir yolun başlangıcıydı ve bu yol hiç bitmiyordu.
The wide river of the Thames stretched before us like the start of a road that never ends.
Uzakta deniz ve gökyüzü birleşiyordu; aralarında hiç çizgi yoktu.
Far out, the sea and the sky joined together with no line between them.
