About this book

On the deck of a yawl anchored in the Thames at dusk, the sails hanging like red clusters of canvas, a brooding gloom over the city beyond, a seaman named Marlow begins to talk. He tells his companions of a river far from England, and of the time he took a steamboat captain's post with a Belgian trading company. "And this also," he says, "has been one of the dark places of the earth." From there the story turns inward and upward, toward a great African river and the enigma waiting at the end of it.
