Ulysses opens on a Dublin morning with a plump man in a yellow dressing gown holding a bowl of lather aloft against the sky. Buck Mulligan is shaving, mocking, performing a little mock-mass on the roof of a seaside tower while Stephen Dedalus looks on, young and grieving, still raw from his mother's deathbed. Down the road, in another house, a man named Leopold Bloom eats his breakfast with relish — "the inner organs of beasts and fowls" — feeds the cat, carries tea up to his wife, and steps out into the same city. James Joyce follows these two across a single ordinary day until their wandering paths finally cross.
