About this book
Ulysses opens on a Dublin morning with a plump man in a yellow dressing gown holding a bowl of lather aloft against the sky. Buck Mulligan is shaving, mocking, performing a little mock-mass on the roof of a seaside tower while Stephen Dedalus looks on, young and grieving, still raw from his mother's deathbed. Down the road, in another house, a man named Leopold Bloom eats his breakfast with relish — "the inner organs of beasts and fowls" — feeds the cat, carries tea up to his wife, and steps out into the same city. James Joyce follows these two across a single ordinary day until their wandering paths finally cross.

Buck Mulligan kwam van boven aan de trap.
Buck Mulligan came from the top of the stairs.
Hij zag er trots en zwaar uit.
He looked proud and heavy.
Hij droeg een kom met zeepschuim erin.
He carried a bowl with soap foam in it.
Een spiegel en een scheermes lagen gekruist op de kom.
A mirror and a razor lay crossed on top of the bowl.
Hij droeg een gele ochtendjas.
He wore a yellow dressing gown.
Die was niet vastgebonden bij de taille.
It was not tied at the waist.
De zachte ochtendlucht bewoog rustig achter hem.
The soft morning air moved gently behind him.
