About this book

On a bright December afternoon, the boys and girls of Harmony Village take to the snow, and daredevil Jill dares good-natured Jack to give her the most dangerous coast of all. A gay red sled flashes down the hill, a black-eyed girl waving her blue tippet like a banner — and then the fence, the bank, and, in a single paragraph, "two cries, and then silence." What began as chattering fun becomes something quieter and harder: two young friends carried home to face long, testing recoveries in the houses on either side of a garden hedge.
