About this book
On a bright December afternoon, the boys and girls of Harmony Village take to the snow, and daredevil Jill dares good-natured Jack to give her the most dangerous coast of all. A gay red sled flashes down the hill, a black-eyed girl waving her blue tippet like a banner — and then the fence, the bank, and, in a single paragraph, "two cries, and then silence." What began as chattering fun becomes something quieter and harder: two young friends carried home to face long, testing recoveries in the houses on either side of a garden hedge.

“Clear the way for the sled!” everyone shouted on a bright December afternoon.
All the boys and girls of Harmony Village were outside, enjoying the first good snow of the season.
There were three long paths for sledding.
The children raced up and down them as fast as they could.
One smooth path led into the meadow, and the little kids gathered there.
Another path crossed the pond, where skaters darted around like water-bugs.
The third path started at the top of a steep hill.
