The Jungle Book

Beyond Mowgli's hills, the book opens onto other lives. A white seal named Kotick, born on crowded northern beaches, witnesses men clubbing his own kind and spends years crossing the oceans in search of an island where seals can live unhunted. A young mongoose, Rikki-tikki-tavi, swept into an English family's garden, takes on the whole cobra household. An elephant-boy is carried off one moonlit night to see what few humans ever have. Each faces courage, law, and the pull of home in its own key.

Kipling writes in a register that is by turns mythic and tender, alive with firelight and phosphorescent seas, ruined cities standing "like empty honeycombs filled with blackness," a clearing trampled hard by hundreds of unseen feet. There is comedy in a proud mule and bowing sea cows, and there is real peril too, but the beasts speak with a gravity that makes the jungle feel governed by something older than fear.

At its heart is a boy learning what it costs to become a man. These are stories about how the wild orders itself, and about the strange grace of finding one's own path when no pack will fully have you. The door stands open.
