About this book
A golden bird steals a king's apples by night. A house in the forest is built of bread and roofed with cake, its windows clear sugar. A little man spins straw into glittering gold and asks, in return, for a firstborn child. These are the tales the Brothers Grimm gathered — German folk stories worn smooth by many mouths, where clever children and cursed princesses and talking animals meet witches, giants, and wolves, and where kindness tends to be rewarded and greed undone.

Det var en gång en kung som hade en vacker trädgård.
Once, a king had a beautiful garden.
I trädgården stod ett träd som bar gyllene äpplen.
In the garden stood a tree that grew golden apples.
Man räknade alltid äpplena.
People always counted the apples.
När äpplena började bli mogna märkte man att ett äpple saknades varje natt.
When the apples began to get ripe, they noticed that one was missing every night.
Kungen blev mycket arg över detta.
The king became very angry about this.
Han sa till trädgårdsmästaren att vakta under trädet hela natten.
He ordered the gardener to watch under the tree all night.
Trädgårdsmästaren skickade sin äldsta son att vakta.
The gardener sent his oldest son to watch.
