About this book
A small girl in too many layers of clothing climbs a mountain path with her aunt, and somewhere along the way she sheds the lot, catching up to the goats and the goatherd boy in nothing but her petticoat. This is Heidi, orphaned and about to be left with a grandfather the whole village fears — the gruff Alm-Uncle, who lives alone among three shaggy fir trees on a sunlit rock above the valley. He drives the aunt off with hard words. And then, against all expectation, he makes the child a bed of sweet-smelling hay and checks on her through a stormy night.

The small old town of Mayenfeld is in a lovely spot.
From the town, a footpath goes through green, wooded land.
This path leads to the bottom of the tall mountains that look down over the valley.
Der begynder stien at gå op ad bjerget ind i Alperne.
There, the path starts to climb steeply up into the Alps.
At that point, the sweet smell of the mountain grass and herbs greets every traveler.
One bright sunny morning in June, a tall, strong young woman from the mountains climbed up the narrow path.
Hun holdt en lille pige i hånden.
She was leading a little girl by the hand.
