The Time Machine

By the next Thursday the same host arrives filthy, limping, haggard, and begins the tale of eight days spent in the year 802,701. He describes crashing onto a rain-lashed lawn beneath a weathered White Sphinx, its sightless eyes smiling through sheets of hail. He describes a world of ruined palaces and a small, gentle people in purple tunics — and, in the dark beneath them, something pale that flees toward a well and climbs down into the earth. "Most of it will sound like lying," he warns. "So be it! It's true—every word of it, all the same."

Wells sends his traveller into a future that keeps refusing the shape he expects. The frail, childlike Eloi and the nocturnal Morlocks are two branches of one exhausted tree, and the theories he builds to explain them keep shifting as tenderness (a girl named Weena, rescued from a river while her own people watch) complicates every cold conclusion. The wonder here carries an undertow.

Beneath the adventure runs a long question about where comfort and struggle finally lead. It is a book about vast time and the small things that survive it: a burnished-steel river under a crimson sky, a match's flare in a cavern, a weathered marble face smiling through the hail.
