Bambi

From that opening, Salten follows a life. Bambi races with his mother on the open grass and has his first conversations with a grasshopper and a butterfly. He meets his cousins Gobo and Faline, learns to listen and to smell, comes to love the night forest and its owls. But the forest holds a shadow the animals only call "Him," and Bambi's first sight of that pale, upright creature at the clearing's edge teaches him a fear that never quite leaves. "That was He," his mother says, and something in him never fully settles again.

What stays with a reader are the ones he meets along the way. Faline, pert and lively, who grows into his love. Gobo, timid, who trusts human kindness and insists He is not wicked. And the mysterious white-headed old stag, who scolds a crying fawn and returns, much later, when it matters most. Around them the smaller creatures gossip and rationalize and grieve, and the seasons turn hard.

A childhood spent learning to be alone; tenderness and loss set against something senseless and larger than any one animal can understand. It never looks away from grief, and it never stops noticing the light on the leaves. An open door onto a forest where the ordinary, a mother's touch, a first day on the meadow, is held as something precious, precisely because it cannot last.
