About this book
It opens with a boast. "I am a coffee-broker, and live at No. 37 Laurier Canal, Amsterdam." So Batavus Drystubble introduces himself, smug, penny-pinching, certain that novels and poetry are collections of lies. He has contempt for the poor, a firm's reputation to guard, and a scheme brewing. When a shabby former schoolmate leaves a parcel of manuscripts on his hands, Drystubble sees only an opportunity: he'll have a young clerk shape the papers into a book about coffee auctions. What comes out instead is something he never intended to publish.
