About this book
It opens with a boast. "I am a coffee-broker, and live at No. 37 Laurier Canal, Amsterdam." So Batavus Drystubble introduces himself, smug, penny-pinching, certain that novels and poetry are collections of lies. He has contempt for the poor, a firm's reputation to guard, and a scheme brewing. When a shabby former schoolmate leaves a parcel of manuscripts on his hands, Drystubble sees only an opportunity: he'll have a young clerk shape the papers into a book about coffee auctions. What comes out instead is something he never intended to publish.

Ja sam posrednik za kafu i živim na adresi Broj 37 na kanalu Laurier u Amsterdamu.
I am a coffee-broker, and I live at No. 37 Laurier Canal, Amsterdam.
Obično ne pišem romane ni slične knjige.
I do not usually write novels or books like that.
Zato mi je trebalo mnogo vremena da odlučim da kupim još papira i počnem ovu knjigu.
So it took me a long time before I decided to buy some extra paper and start this book.
Vi, dragi čitaoče, upravo ste uzeli ovu knjigu u ruke.
You, dear reader, have just picked up this book.
Morate je pročitati do kraja, bilo da ste posrednik za kafu ili nešto drugo.
You must finish it, whether you are a coffee-broker or something else.
Nikada nisam napisao ništa nalik romanu.
I have never written anything like a novel.
Čak ni ne volim da čitam takve stvari, jer sam poslovan čovek.
I do not even like to read such things, because I am a businessman.
