About this book
It opens with a boast. "I am a coffee-broker, and live at No. 37 Laurier Canal, Amsterdam." So Batavus Drystubble introduces himself, smug, penny-pinching, certain that novels and poetry are collections of lies. He has contempt for the poor, a firm's reputation to guard, and a scheme brewing. When a shabby former schoolmate leaves a parcel of manuscripts on his hands, Drystubble sees only an opportunity: he'll have a young clerk shape the papers into a book about coffee auctions. What comes out instead is something he never intended to publish.

I am a coffee-broker, and I live at No. 37 Laurier Canal, Amsterdam.

Du, kära läsare, har just tagit upp den här boken.
You, dear reader, have just picked up this book.
Du måste läsa klart den, vare sig du är kaffemäklare eller något annat.
You must finish it, whether you are a coffee-broker or something else.
Jag har aldrig skrivit något som liknar en roman.
I have never written anything like a novel.
Jag tycker inte ens om att läsa sådant, eftersom jag är affärsman.
I do not even like to read such things, because I am a businessman.
