About this book

It begins with a line that has never stopped being quiet and terrible: across the gulf of space, "intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us." While an unnamed Englishman goes about ordinary life, learning to ride a bicycle, reading the papers, cylinders are falling out of the Martian sky onto the Surrey countryside, and no one yet understands what has come.
