The War of the Worlds

A crowd gathers at the pit, expecting men. What emerges instead is a greyish, glistening bulk with dark eyes and writhing tentacles, and the sight of it scatters them. Then comes the Heat-Ray, and the peaceful deputation with its white flag turns to fire in an instant. From there the narrator flees across a burning heath, hides in a ruined house with a curate whose faith is coming apart, and crosses paths with an artilleryman full of grand schemes. In London, meanwhile, his brother is swept into the vast panicked exodus that empties a city.

Wells writes the apocalypse with a strange doubled vision: the clinical eye of a naturalist cataloguing Martian anatomy and the trembling one of a man who has become, in his own words, "an animal among the animals, under the Martian heel." Blackened roads lie strewn like the ruins of Pompeii; an avenue of scarlet weed rises like giant drops of blood; the ironclad Thunder Child drives ablaze into the machines while refugees watch from the sea.

What lingers is not the machinery but the questions underneath it — what humanity looks like when its usual order is stripped away, and how much of the world it ever truly held. For all its cosmic reach, the story keeps narrowing, until everything that has been broken open comes to rest on something small, and human, and tender.
