About this book
It begins with a line that has never stopped being quiet and terrible: across the gulf of space, "intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this Earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us." While an unnamed Englishman goes about ordinary life, learning to ride a bicycle, reading the papers, cylinders are falling out of the Martian sky onto the Surrey countryside, and no one yet understands what has come.

Uzun yıllar önce, hiç kimse bu dünyayı birinin izlediğine inanmıyordu.
Many years ago, no one believed something was watching this world.
Biri bizi yakından ve dikkatle izliyordu.
Something was watching us closely and carefully.
Bu gözlemcilerin zihinleri insan zihinlerinden daha büyüktü, ama onlar da insanlar gibi ölebilirdi.
These watchers had minds greater than human minds, but they could die, like humans.
İnsanlar kendi hayatlarıyla meşgulken, bu varlıklar onları dikkatle inceliyordu.
While people were busy with their own lives, these beings studied them carefully.
Belki de bizi, mikroskoplu bir adamın bir damla suda yaşayan küçücük canlıları incelemesi gibi inceliyorlardı.
Perhaps they studied us the way a man with a microscope studies tiny creatures living in a drop of water.
İnsanlar küçük işlerini yaparak Dünya’nın üzerinde dolaşıyordu ve kendilerinden çok emin ve rahattı.
Men moved across the Earth doing their small tasks, feeling very confident and calm.
Çevrelerindeki dünyayı kontrol ettiklerinden emindiler.
They felt sure that they controlled the world around them.
