Journey to the Center of the Earth

So the expedition sets out: the fervent uncle, the doubting nephew who narrates it all, and Hans, the calm Icelandic guide whose few words and steady hands keep saving them. They climb a volcano, wait for a shadow to point the way, and lower themselves into the dark. Below waits a world no one has mapped: forests of pale mushrooms forty feet tall, glistening walls hung with quartz like chandeliers, and an entire ocean beneath the earth, lit by a strange electric glow.

Verne writes the wonder plainly and lets it accumulate. Axel's fear gives way to astonishment; the Professor names a sea after himself and means to keep the honor. Prehistoric monsters surface, a red eye "large as a man's head"; and along the shore the bones of ages lie commingled in dust. Behind them all, the initials of the man who claimed to have come this way first.

Left behind in Hamburg is Gräuben, the professor's goddaughter, whose fearless blessing sends him down carrying her name. The same thing that overrides Axel's every objection pulls the reader down after him — the impossible made suddenly, gloriously plausible, one measured step at a time.
