About this book
At seventeen, newly orphaned, David Balfour sets out from Essendean with a letter to deliver and an inheritance to claim. The road leads him to the house of Shaws, a great, decayed, half-finished mansion where his name is met with fear and scorn, and where a woman on a hilltop cries out a curse before vanishing: "Blood built it; blood stopped the building of it; blood shall bring it down." His uncle Ebenezer waits inside, miserly and secretive, and what David expected to be a homecoming becomes something far stranger.

Jeg vil begynde historien om mine eventyr en bestemt morgen. Det var tidligt i juni, i året 1751.
I will begin the story of my adventures on a certain morning early in June, in the year 1751.
Den morgen tog jeg nøglen ud af døren til min fars hus for sidste gang.
On that morning, I took the key out of the door of my father’s house for the last time.
Solen begyndte at skinne på bakketoppene. Jeg gik ned ad vejen.
The sun began to shine on the tops of the hills as I walked down the road.
Jeg nåede frem til præstens hus. Fuglene sang i haven.
By the time I reached the minister’s house, the blackbirds were singing in the garden lilacs.
Tågen lå over dalen om morgenen.
The mist was over the valley at dawn.
Den begyndte at stige og forsvinde.
It started to rise and disappear.
Hr. Campbell, præsten i Essendean, ventede på mig ved havelågen.
Mr. Campbell, the minister of Essendean, was waiting for me by the garden gate.
