About this book
At seventeen, newly orphaned, David Balfour sets out from Essendean with a letter to deliver and an inheritance to claim. The road leads him to the house of Shaws, a great, decayed, half-finished mansion where his name is met with fear and scorn, and where a woman on a hilltop cries out a curse before vanishing: "Blood built it; blood stopped the building of it; blood shall bring it down." His uncle Ebenezer waits inside, miserly and secretive, and what David expected to be a homecoming becomes something far stranger.

Počeću priču o svojim doživljajima jednog jutra početkom juna 1751. godine.
I will begin the story of my adventures on a certain morning early in June, in the year 1751.
Tog jutra sam poslednji put izvadio ključ iz vrata očeve kuće.
On that morning, I took the key out of the door of my father’s house for the last time.
Dok sam hodao niz put, sunce je počelo da sija na vrhovima brda.
The sun began to shine on the tops of the hills as I walked down the road.
Kad sam stigao do sveštenikove kuće, kosovi su pevali u jorgovanima u bašti.
By the time I reached the minister’s house, the blackbirds were singing in the garden lilacs.
U zoru je nad dolinom bila magla.
The mist was over the valley at dawn.
Počela je da se diže i nestaje.
It started to rise and disappear.
Gospodin Kembel, sveštenik iz Esendina, čekao me je kod baštenske kapije.
Mr. Campbell, the minister of Essendean, was waiting for me by the garden gate.
