About this book
At seventeen, newly orphaned, David Balfour sets out from Essendean with a letter to deliver and an inheritance to claim. The road leads him to the house of Shaws, a great, decayed, half-finished mansion where his name is met with fear and scorn, and where a woman on a hilltop cries out a curse before vanishing: "Blood built it; blood stopped the building of it; blood shall bring it down." His uncle Ebenezer waits inside, miserly and secretive, and what David expected to be a homecoming becomes something far stranger.
