About this book
At seventeen, newly orphaned, David Balfour sets out from Essendean with a letter to deliver and an inheritance to claim. The road leads him to the house of Shaws, a great, decayed, half-finished mansion where his name is met with fear and scorn, and where a woman on a hilltop cries out a curse before vanishing: "Blood built it; blood stopped the building of it; blood shall bring it down." His uncle Ebenezer waits inside, miserly and secretive, and what David expected to be a homecoming becomes something far stranger.

A kalandjaim történetét egy reggelen kezdem, 1751 júniusában, a hónap elején.
I will begin the story of my adventures on a certain morning early in June, in the year 1751.
Azon a reggelen utoljára húztam ki a kulcsot a ház ajtajából, ahol apámmal éltem.
On that morning, I took the key out of the door of my father’s house for the last time.
A nap sütni kezdett a dombok tetején, amikor lefelé sétáltam az úton.
The sun began to shine on the tops of the hills as I walked down the road.
Mire a pap házához értem, a feketerigók már énekeltek a kertben, az orgonabokrok között.
By the time I reached the minister’s house, the blackbirds were singing in the garden lilacs.
Hajnalban köd ült a völgy fölött.
The mist was over the valley at dawn.
Kezdett felszállni és eltűnni.
It started to rise and disappear.
Campbell úr, Essendean lelkésze, a kertkapunál várt rám.
Mr. Campbell, the minister of Essendean, was waiting for me by the garden gate.
