About this book
At seventeen, newly orphaned, David Balfour sets out from Essendean with a letter to deliver and an inheritance to claim. The road leads him to the house of Shaws, a great, decayed, half-finished mansion where his name is met with fear and scorn, and where a woman on a hilltop cries out a curse before vanishing: "Blood built it; blood stopped the building of it; blood shall bring it down." His uncle Ebenezer waits inside, miserly and secretive, and what David expected to be a homecoming becomes something far stranger.

I will begin the story of my adventures on a certain morning early in June, in the year 1751.
Esa mañana, saqué la llave de la puerta de la casa de mi padre por última vez.
On that morning, I took the key out of the door of my father’s house for the last time.
El sol empezó a brillar en las cimas de las colinas mientras yo caminaba por el camino.
The sun began to shine on the tops of the hills as I walked down the road.
Cuando llegué a la casa del pastor, los mirlos cantaban en las lilas del jardín.
By the time I reached the minister’s house, the blackbirds were singing in the garden lilacs.
La niebla cubría el valle al amanecer.
The mist was over the valley at dawn.
Empezó a subir y a desaparecer.
It started to rise and disappear.
El señor Campbell, el pastor de Essendean, me esperaba junto a la puerta del jardín.
Mr. Campbell, the minister of Essendean, was waiting for me by the garden gate.
