About this book
At seventeen, newly orphaned, David Balfour sets out from Essendean with a letter to deliver and an inheritance to claim. The road leads him to the house of Shaws, a great, decayed, half-finished mansion where his name is met with fear and scorn, and where a woman on a hilltop cries out a curse before vanishing: "Blood built it; blood stopped the building of it; blood shall bring it down." His uncle Ebenezer waits inside, miserly and secretive, and what David expected to be a homecoming becomes something far stranger.

Zacznę opowieść o moich przygodach od pewnego ranka na początku czerwca 1751 roku.
I will begin the story of my adventures on a certain morning early in June, in the year 1751.
Tego ranka po raz ostatni wyjąłem klucz z drzwi domu mojego ojca.
On that morning, I took the key out of the door of my father’s house for the last time.
Słońce zaczęło świecić na szczytach wzgórz, kiedy szedłem drogą.
The sun began to shine on the tops of the hills as I walked down the road.
Kiedy dotarłem do domu pastora, kosy śpiewały w bzach w ogrodzie.
By the time I reached the minister’s house, the blackbirds were singing in the garden lilacs.
O świcie nad doliną leżała mgła.
The mist was over the valley at dawn.
Mgła zaczęła znikać.
It started to rise and disappear.
Pan Campbell, pastor z Essendean, czekał na mnie przy furtce ogrodu.
Mr. Campbell, the minister of Essendean, was waiting for me by the garden gate.
