On a snowy afternoon, a girl named Alice sits by the fire with her kittens and wonders aloud about the room she can see in the mirror over the mantel. Then the glass softens to a bright silvery mist, and she climbs through into it. On the other side the fire is real, the clock wears a grinning face, and the chessmen walk about on their own errands. This is Lewis Carroll's looking-glass world, where a whole country is laid out in squares like a great chessboard, and a girl who begins as a pawn sets out to become a queen.

A Red Queen runs Alice breathless to explain that "it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place." A White Queen believes six impossible things before breakfast and keeps to a rule of jam tomorrow and jam yesterday, but never jam today. Humpty Dumpty perches cross-legged on a narrow wall and insists that words mean whatever he chooses them to mean. Tweedledum and Tweedledee squabble under a tree, dressing in makeshift armor to fight over a spoiled rattle.

Beneath the wordplay runs something tender and a little strange — a wood where things forget their names, a shop whose wares vanish the moment you look straight at them, a knight singing at sunset in a light Alice will remember for years. The book keeps turning a quiet question: who is dreaming whom.
